Magical Beginnings

Like many magicians, my mom bought me a magic kit for Christmas when I was eight years old. She said I drove the family crazy with the change bag and silks. Mom said she wasted her money on Legos and Transformers that year. She decided to sign me up for a few magic lessons to prepare a little something for my school’s talent show that spring. That’s when I met my mentor, Larry Taylor. (That show ended up being 25 minutes long with a vanishing and reappearing girl as the finale.) The school went crazy. I was hooked.

I started taking lessons from Larry Taylor of Royalty Magic in Miamisburg, Ohio. He never showed me how to do push button magic. Mr. Taylor started me off with manipulation and dove magic. He would say, “You’re 8 years old, you can do this. You’re 9 years old, you can do this. You’re 10 years old, your hands are big enough to handle these balls, coins, and cards, just like an adult.” If I flashed he would say, “flash” and I would have to start over until I got it right. He never accepted mediocre work from me. Mr. Taylor is the finest magician I know. Larry Taylor changed my life forever.

My Doves

When I was 8 years old, Mr. Taylor said I should get a couple of doves. A month later, he said I should get a couple more. He said I was big enough to load 4 doves. We ended up buying 8 doves and within a year a half they multiplied to over 80. My Uncle Jeff built me a huge aviary in the back yard. I now have a business selling doves to magicians. Japan and Las Vegas

A highlight of my life was when I was 9 years old. I was one of four junior magicians in the United States selected to appear in a Japanese documentary that appeared on the Children’s Public Broadcast Channel which aired in Japan. It was titled, “The Life of a Young Magician.” A Japanese film crew spent 10 days filming me at home , in Miamisburg, Ohio and at Abbott’s Magic Get Together 2001 in Colon, Michigan. Another highlight of my life, was when I was 10 years old and was accepted to compete in the "teen" competition in Las Vegas in 2002. Joe Stevens said I "would give those teens a run for their money." What a great time. I met so many famous magicians. During the teen luncheon, I sat in between Jeff McBride and Lance Burton. I was so nervous I couldn’t eat.

The biggest highlight of my life though, was winning the International Brotherhood of Magicians Junior competition when I was only 12 years old. Wow, is all I can say. Incredible experience.
